I'm writing to send word that Brooklyn's own Kingsborough Community College has an urban farm in partnership with Project Eats. Anyone can register for (affordable) Continuing Education classes for spring and early summer. Classes include urban gardening, flower production, and small local food business, taught by some of the borough's foremost food & farming experts, including Nicole Taylor of foodculturist.com and Molly Culver of bkfarmyards.org. Attached is the flyer and a photo of the farm, which is located right on campus with a great view of Sheepshead Bay & the Rockaways. 

We also have open volunteer days Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30 for those who want to stop by an lend a hand.

All- Check out the new outdoor market in downtown Brooklyn. Very nice job they have done and a sweet plot of a community garden. 1 garden at a time: inch by inch, row by row....:)

Hello all, the big clean up for the Harlem success Garden is on Friday, Nov 12 from 9am till 2pm, at 173 W 134th St, bet Lenox and Adam Clayton Powel, bring as many people for a long, or little as you can.

When people think of New York City, farming probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind, but one group is doing their part to make the Big Apple edible for its local residents.

In this video, Reuters takes a look at the initiatives of an ambitious organic farming business, Brooklyn Grange, looking to transform NYC's vast expanse of empty rooftops into lush forests of food.

Brooklyn Grange's first farm is a 40,000-square-foot warehouse rooftop that grows hundreds of thousands of plants without the use of pesticides or other chemicals. According to its website, tomatoes are one of its biggest crops with over 40 varietals planted. (Read More)

Today, I farm a 6,000-square-foot roof-turned-vegetable-farm on the
shoreline of the East River in Greenpoint, North Brooklyn. I believe
it's the only full-on commercial green roof growing in the country, to
date. Built atop a sound stage warehouse by television and movie
production company Broadway Stages, and installed by green roof company
Goode Green, the Eagle Street Rooftop
Farm is entering its second spring this year. I aim to produce
enough food to supply area restaurants, a weekly farm-based market, and a
new community supported agriculture (CSA) subscription program that

U.S. Plans Spot Tests of Organic Products

The Department of Agriculture said on Friday that it would begin enforcing rules requiring the spot testing of organically grown foods for traces of
pesticides, after an auditor exposed major gaps in federal oversight of the organic food industry.

Spot testing is required by a 1990 law that established the basis for national organic standards, but in a report released on Thursday by the office of Phyllis K. Fong, the inspector general of agriculture, investigators wrote that regulators never made sure the testing was being carried out.

The report pointed to numerous shortcomings at the agriculture department’s National Organic Program, which regulates the industry, including poor oversight
of some organic operations overseas and a lack of urgency in cracking down on
marketers of bogus organic products. (Read More)
