There will be TWO community potlucks in the neighborhood this weekend as part of Slow Food USA's campaign to get healthy food in schools. More info here:

Paper Tiger TV came and filmed the work workshop at my house last year and how we will be featured in this film. I haven't seen it yet either, so come watch it with me!

A GARDEN OF PAPER TIGER TELEVISION DELIGHTS

On Thursday, August 27th, Paper Tiger Television will screen a mix of new and vintage videos in the luscious environs of an East Village community garden, located on the corner of 6th Street and Avenue B.

In celebration of Manhattan?s famed east side, Paper Tiger will show excerpts from award-winning pieces about Tompkin?s Square Park and gentrification in the Lower East Side, as well as newer pieces chronicling the environmental efforts of individual New Yorkers and last April?s massive guerilla street art takeover.

Garden gates open at 7:30 pm, screening will begin at sundown (8 pm). Intrepid wanderers and tiger seekers, alike, are guaranteed roaring hilarity and jungle surprises!

Ooooops... apparently the Q train IS stopping at Newkirk. Disregard previous notice!!
Anne Pope Comment by Anne Pope on April 4, 2009 at 6:55pm
Hey all.

According to MTA notices, the Coney Island-bound Q train is not stopping at Newkirk this weekend. Not a big deal, you just go one stop further to Avenue H, then walk back up on East 19th to Foster Avenue and you have arrived. It's a pretty walk, too!

btw, Peter mentioned in his post a movement to get the First Family to plant an organic garden at the White House. According to today's times it's happening! Groovy!

Jocelyn-I totally agree. Our lives will be richer as we move slowly back toward a DIY culture. A close relative in Phoenix, god bless her, used to describe her favorite activity as "shopping." She has now joined a knitting group, and that's her fave thing to do now. She asked me if I wanted her to knit me anything, and I said only if it's organic cotton. Turns out she found some, so who knows where this will all lead?

I commented on Peter's posting but I wanted to add here too...I think it's so amazing that the depression is opening people to vibrant stuff like community gardens. That's what my friends and I always talk about lately, that the crisis can bring people together and inspire us to get back to basics and get our priorities straight. It's really cool.

Great blog post, Peter! And thanks for the link to Just Food's petition to legalize beekeeping in NYC.

We do have a good thing going here! Big thanks to Micki, Madeline and Maikel (what's up with the "M" thing?) for hosting, and to everyone for showing up with delicious food and great ideas! And thanks, of course, to our friends the worms...

Thanks Madeline and Maikel for hosting last weekend's supper club. Makes me realize what I've been missing. And I second Carolyn: Flatbush Supper Club is the best damn supper club in NYC! And for those of you I didn't bore with anecdotes about the Greenmarket panel on urban ag, I wrote a brief blog about it: http://bit.ly/4xAS. Imagine peace.
