YES WE CAN Volunteer Challenge February – April 2009

Brooklyn Green Team & GreenEdge Collaborative NYC Present We all have a gift. Some can sing and dance; others can garden like a gnome, rake leaves faster than Paul Bunyan can chop down trees, or even recycle with their eyes closed! There are vast and varied opportunities to let loose your talents for the planet. Commit to volunteering at least three hours in the next three months. We know you can do it. Oh, and we’ll email you lots of volunteer opportunities.

3 HOURS. THREE MONTHS.
• Plant a tree (or a million with milliontreesnyc.org)

• Mulch or garden at your nearest park

• Staff events of green organizations

• Clean up a beach

• Pick up garbage on your street or someone else’s

• Conduct a bird count

• Teach people how to recycle

“…Given the crisis we're in and the hardships so many people are going through, we can't allow any idle hands. Everybody's going to have to be involved. Everybody's going to have to pitch in."
-President Barack Obama

Volunteers are needed for the Gowanus Clean & Green event this Saturday. Details below:

Volunteers are still needed for next Saturday, June 27th's Clean &
Green volunteer clean up of the Gowanus Canal street ends, from
11:00am to 2:00pm. To volunteer for June 27 or subsequent volunteer
days, please contact Lauren at volunteer@gowanuscanalconservancy.org
or just show up at Degraw and Bond Streets at 11:00am. Our sign-in
tent will be down by the Canal.

The May 30 clean up was a success with the volunteer team collecting
more than 20 bags of debris and weeds and spreading wildflower seeds
in the areas along the canal on the Carroll Gardens side of Degraw
street. The Gowanus Wildflower Mix was specially created for the
Gowanus Canal Conservancy and donated by Applewood Seed Company. A
huge thanks to all who came out and worked very hard to make a huge
difference in that street end.

Our diets have probably the biggest impact on our environment... www.SproutCraft.com Cafe seeks to maximize the positive affects of what we eat by sourcing local, organic ingredients produced with sustainable practices and preparing an all vegan menu that emphasizes sprouted, live-cultured and mostly raw foods!

Bring your street-tree care questions and find out more about the city's
efforts to increase and protect the urban forest canopy.
